Edge and Cloud Computing

The infrastructure provides an experimental test platform in an outdoor environment formed by the two university campuses and the surrounding streets. A set of nodes, consisting of compute, storage, and communications units, is deployed and distributed along the adjacent streets of the campuses, Drone-Lab and Greenhouse. This allows Multi-access Edge Computing (MEC). The devices integrate high-end GPUs prepared for running different AI/ML use cases.

Use Cases

The deployment of the MECs offers many options for use cases.

  • Assisted driving and autonomous driving applications for land vehicles in the streets adjacent to the CBL campus. Vehicle-to-ground communications will be provided by the MEC nodes that will include both 5G+ legacy, WiFi, and 5G+ communications. The nodes will be installed on the lighting poles in the adjacent streets of the CBL and the library street of the CN. Artificial intelligence functions, dynamically installed in the different elements of the infrastructure, will be responsible for the automatic management of the service that will facilitate minimal human intervention.
